Responsibilities
The NSA Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) is one of the Intelligence Community's premier scientific and engineering research facilities. Throughout its rich history, LPS has solved some of the Nation's toughest technical challenges, while partnering with stakeholders within NSA, the Intelligence Community, the DoD, and other US Govt agencies. At LPS, a collection of highly skilled scientists and engineers 1) conduct in-house research at LPS world class facilities and 2) manage external research through a wide variety of academic institutions, national laboratories, and industrial partnerships. This job advertisement concerns the latter. A key objective of the LPS is to address the Agency's most difficult technical hurdles by realizing breakthroughs that are typically several generations beyond the state-of-the-art. LPS is currently looking for energetic and innovative physicists and engineers to develop, manage, and evaluate external research programs that explore Quantum Information Science. This portfolio includes improvements to qubit quantum operations, development of high fidelity quantum measurement technologies, micro-fabrication techniques used for qubit fabrication, and the exploration of novel devices and protocols. Candidates for this position should have a detailed understanding of atomic and/or superconducting quantum physics and familiarity with qubit fabrication and test and measurement techniques. Candidates are expected to review and summarize the results of ongoing work and make recommendations for future areas of interest, participate in site visits and yearly reviews, and develop new research. Qualifications
Preferred candidates for this position will have the following experience and qualifications: The candidate must have a postgraduate degree in Physics or Engineering ' a Ph.D. is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience performing theoretical or experimental physics research in either trapped-ion or superconducting-qubits. Experience in quantum information research is a plus, as is experience and interest in program management. An inquisitive nature and strong willingness to learn new things are an absolute necessity for success. Entry is with a Bachelor's degree plus 7 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree plus 5 years of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree plus 3 years of relevant experience. Degree must be in either (1) professional Engineering, (2) Physics or Astronomy from an accredited college or (3) a relevant professional technical field (e.g. chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, geology). For all of the above degrees, if program is not ABET EAC accredited, it must include specified coursework.* *Specified coursework includes courses in differential and integral calculus and 5 of the following 18 areas: (a) statics or dynamics, (b) strength of materials/stress-strain relationships, (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics, (d) thermodynamics, (e) electromagnetic fields, (f) nature and properties of materials/relating particle and aggregate structure to properties, (g) solid state electronics, (h) microprocessor applications, (i), computer systems, (j) signal processing, (k) digital design, (l) systems and control theory, (m) circuits or generalized circuits, (n) communication systems, (o) power systems, (p) computer networks, (q) software development, (r) Any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, or soil mechanics. Relevant experience must be performing professional engineering or physical sciences work and/or conducting academic or independent research in a technical field (e.g., mathematics, engineering, cognitive sciences and physical sciences). Experience on polymath projects (requiring multiple skills), technical publications, patent applications, and teaching are preferred.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Range: $94,796 - $145,629 *The qualifications listed are the minimum acceptable to be considered for the position. Salary offers are based on candidates' education level and years of experience relevant to the position and also take into account information provided by the hiring manager/organization regarding the work level for the position.
