Look no further than the National Security Agency (NSA). NSA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Summer Intern Program offers the opportunity for training and experience in auditing multiple disciplines (e.g., program performance, cybersecurity and financial statements. The OIG Summer Internship offers full-time paid internships for undergraduate and master's degree students each year. It is a 12-week program that gives rising college seniors or graduate level students a wide variety of opportunities to be agents for change, analyze operations for efficiency and effectiveness and deliver results to our customers to reduce program costs and provide value to NSA and the US taxpayer. You are one of the team - Day One! You will receive training and be part of an audit team from day one. You will be assigned a supervisor and sponsor to help you quickly learn and acclimate. During your first few days on the team, you will participate in an overview to become familiar with various business functions at the NSA and within the Intelligence Community (IC). Throughout the 12-week period, you will have the opportunity to work on IG audits that provide meaningful recommendations for programmatic change within the Agency and influence the direction of the Intelligence Community and DoD. Be the premier fact finder for the Agency! The NSA/CSS core missions are to protect U.S. national security systems and to produce foreign signals intelligence information. Since 1951, the NSA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has been the independent agent for individual and organizational integrity within the Agency. The NSA OIG has the authority to conduct inspections, audits, investigations, special inquiries, and other reviews of programs and operations at NSA/CSS. The NSA OIG Audit Division offers a wide variety of opportunities for individuals to broaden their knowledge of corporate Agency operations and work with a diverse staff. As a member of the NSA OIG Audit Division, the selectee will research, plan and conduct independent audits and related reviews of Agency programs and operations, in accordance with Government Audit Standards. The audits and reviews are designed to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards and to improve the Agency's efficiency and effectiveness. As an NSA summer intern, you will work within an audit team evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of NSA programs. The specific audit responsibilities include: - Assess and evaluate internal controls within the context of the audit objective; - Identify and evaluate criteria to measure performance and evaluate compliance; - Conduct interviews within the context of an audit or review; - Gather and analyze audit evidence and compare observed results to specified requirements in the criteria; - Identify problems and develop recommendations to improve the Agency's efficiency and effectiveness; - Write work papers and reports outlining results and findings from assessments and evaluations; The selectee should be comfortable working in a team and must be able to communicate (orally and in writing) with OIG management and audit teams about technically complex issues. The selectee should demonstrate process-oriented thinking, strong problem solving-skills, and a commitment to discerning the truth. Specific skills obtained may include: - Gain a working knowledge of the OIG's audit processes - Obtain hands on experience with the elements of an audit finding including criteria, condition, cause, effect and recommendations - Gain an understanding of Government Auditing Standards - Use OIG IT systems and tools for documentation and to enhance audit techniques
- Must be a U.S. citizen - Must be eligible to be granted a security clearance - Must be a full-time undergraduate student entering the final year of an undergraduate degree program or a graduate level student - Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred - Must be available for the entire 12-week program - Must be available for an operational interview and other applicable processing between December 2017 and March 2018 - Major studies areas of consideration: - Accounting - Information Technology
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
- Students are paid a competitive salary commensurate with their education level. - Receive annual leave, sick leave and paid federal holidays - Participation in agency-wide extracurricular programs - Students who attend schools in excess of 75 miles from Ft. Meade, MD, are eligible for a round trip airfare ticket to and from school or mileage reimbursement up to the cost of a government-issued airline ticket. - Daily transportation to and from work is not provided. Students participating in the program are highly encouraged to bring a vehicle. Carpooling with other students MAY be available but NOT guaranteed. - Subsidized housing accommodations are available upon request if school is located in excess of 75 miles from NSA main HQs campus
