The Career Specialist provides comprehensive consultative services strengthened by accountability measures that assist students in developing short and long-term plans to meet their desired career objective and meet/exceed the employment goals of the University. S/he is expected to become a subject matter expert on employment in their assigned field of study to develop strong long-term partnerships with Kaplan University students and employers. Career Specialists provide personalized support services that engage and assist our students in achieving their education and career goals.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Proactively build rapport, develop and maintain relationships with assigned cohort of students/graduates and provide customized consultative services geared toward career planning and job search strategies. Activities include but are not limited to: assessing the student’s career needs, assisting the student with developing a personalized career plan, coaching on effective resume writing, use of social media in job searching, effective job search strategy, networking advice, conducting mock interviews, partnering with students on a successful job search and verifying graduate employment with the graduate and with employers.
Assume full ownership for meeting the employment metrics of graduates for the University through the collection, analysis and reporting of graduate employment outcomes and service-related metrics for assigned student cohort.
Collaborate with and prepare students in their development of skills such as time management, business etiquette, conflict management, communication and other soft skills to assist students in becoming strong candidates for employment. Some conversations will require dealing with sensitive topics such as salary, appearance and professional skills with non-traditional students.
Develop relationships with employers to plan, manage and host industry specific employer presentations and to market student/graduate skills and gather job leads. This includes the research and proactive outreach to potential employers to source individualized job leads to support students, as well as marketing planned events to students and distributing employer job leads.
Partner with KU faculty members and other departments within KU to increase awareness of in-field employment opportunities and educate students on occupational directions within their program of study.
Develop content for and facilitate career-related virtual presentations that match students and employers' needs.
Be open and adaptable to a rapidly changing environment. Adjusting to the needs of each individual student and the needs of the department.
Complete other duties and tasks as assigned and requested
Bachelor's Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
3-5 years related experience in Recruiting/Staffing, Career Services, Higher Education, or Student Affairs
Possess a strong customer service background in a metrics based environment
Experience with Student Information Systems such as Cvue
Experience in MS Office and the ability to adapt quickly to adjusting technology needs; able to present in a virtual environment; knowledge of various social media platforms and able to generate posts/replies on internal social media platform; able to research information using the Internet
Excellent oral and written communications skills that enable effective communications with students, peers, superiors, and business contacts
Proven ability to handle confidential information, build and maintain relationships
Ability to identify and problem solve in a fast paced environment
Highly organized with great attention to detail
Self-starter and able to work independently
Comfortable making cold phone calls to students and employers
Must be available for occasional evening/weekend events
Flexible and willing to perform other tasks as assigned
Bachelors degree or higher
Commensurate with experience
